Bell’s Palsy is characterized by paralysis on one side of the face and affects about forty thousand Americans each year. This disorder is caused by swelling of the seventh cranial nerve in the face. Sometimes it goes away forever; it might go away and return, or it might never go away. If you’re suffering from Bell’s palsy, you now have options that weren’t available before. Modern surgical procedures can reanimate the face, correct facial distortion, and restore mouth and eye functions. Surgeons can treat this disorder in several ways. One procedure involves relocating healthy muscle and nerve tissue from one part of the face to another. Another involves affixing a spring above the eye, allowing it to open and close. Regardless of the method, facial reanimation surgery requires an expert. When choosing a plastic surgeon for this procedure, make sure you feel confident he or she has enough expertise in this area to provide you satisfactory results.
