In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration banned silicone gel breast implants for most breast surgery. Currently, saline filled implants have replaced the silicone implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction. The basic silicone implant was an oval or round ball of semi-solid silicone in a solid silicone envelope. It weighed about eight ounces, and the average implant would fill a soup bowl, although it came in all sizes. The first indication of a problem occurred when silicone gel began to leak through the envelopes of older implants. The newer envelopes were made thicker to prevent leaking. However, the FDA still believed them to be dangerous and has since restricted their use. Problems may occur if the body absorbs the agents or properties of the silicone gel from inside the implant or from the envelope itself. Various symptoms may occur such as fatigue, aching joints or changes in joints. If you have silicone implants, and experienced these or other symptoms, it is recommended you have your doctor evaluate you. For more information on silicone implants, consult with a plastic surgeon.
