| Liposuction: Risks |
What are the risks involved with liposuction? In general, the newest liposuction techniques are very safe. While complications such as blood clots, infections and allergic reactions are extremely rare, they can occur. Risks increase if a greater number of areas are being treated at the same time and if the surgery sites are larger in size. Removing a large amount of fat may require longer operating times than smaller procedures. Any combination of these factors can create greater hazards for infection, delays in healing, the formation of fat clots or blood clots that can migrate to the lungs and cause death, excessive fluid loss which can lead to shock or fluid accumulation that must be drained, friction burns or other damage to the skin or nerves, perforation injuries to the vital organs and unfavorable drug reactions.
As with most surgeries, individuals with medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation or compromised immune systems should not undergo liposuction. Please inform your surgeon of any existing medical conditions or recent surgeries.
