Breast Lift: Recovery
When can you plan to resume “life as usual”? Recovery time can vary depending upon the patient and complexity of the procedure, but here are some general guidelines:
  • You’ll need to recuperate from surgery for the first 24 to 48 hours. You will be sore and will want to sleep.

  • Don’t plan to return to work for at least a week.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise for four to six weeks.

  • External stitches may be removed in a week to 10 days. The incision scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks, then will begin to fade. Your breasts will remain swollen for three to four weeks following surgery. They will be tender to touch and exercise.

  • No lifting for two weeks and no heavy lifting for about four weeks after surgery.

  • Avoid exposure to the sun or tanning beds. Use a sun-screen of at least SPF 15 on breasts and incisions to lessen possibility of more noticeable scars.

    Following surgery, your surgeon may apply gauze bandages to your incision sites and you may be placed in a surgical bra. You should receive instructions about changing the gauze and keeping the incisions clean.

    Call your doctor if:

  • There is an increase in pain, swelling, redness, drainage or bleeding in the surgical area;

  • You develop headache, muscle aches, dizziness or a general ill feeling with fever, nausea or vomiting.

    Usual follow up after surgery is at one week, one month, three and/or six months and thereafter in annual exams.
