| Eyelid Surgery: Who Is a Candidate? |
|
 |
Blepharoplasty patients generally fall into two categories: The first develop excess skin and fat on their eyelids during childhood or adolescence and usually have the surgery in their early 20s. The second group experience eyelid changes as a result of aging and start coming in for surgery in their mid-30s or 40s. People in their 70s or 80s also have undergone eyelid lifts.
While most people who seek eyelid-lifts do so purely for cosmetic reasons, the procedure also offers functional benefits if you have severe hooding of the upper eyelids. Extreme hooding can obstruct peripheral vision and reduce your range of upward vision. Blepharoplasty can restore normal range of vision.
There are two common conditions that eyelid lifts do not correct:
- Crow's feet, or the "dynamic" wrinkles that appear on the outer corners of your eyes when you smile. Blepharoplasty only corrects big sagging.
- Dark circles under the eyes caused by dark pigmentation of the skin or by very thin, translucent skin. If the circles are actually shadows cast by sagging lower eyelids, a lower eyelid-lift can usually correct the problem.
