| Eyelid Surgery: Preparing for Surgery |
|
 |
Your plastic surgeon may require you to be examined by an ophthalmologist prior to surgery. The exam should include glaucoma testing and measurement of tear production. If you have dry eyes, the condition could complicate the healing process and necessitate a surgical procedure that tightens the lower eyelid horizontally. Your surgeon may recommend not to operate if your dry-eye condition is very severe. Dry eyes combined with eyelid skin removal could result in injury and infection of the cornea after surgery.
After checking in at the surgicenter, you will don a hospital gown. Electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart's electrical activity (EKG) during surgery. A cuff will be placed on your arm to monitor blood pressure, and a plastic oxygen monitor will be placed on your finger.
While you are in a sitting position, your surgeon will place marks on your upper and lower eyelids to indicate the location of fat pads and extra skin that is to be removed.
Your eyes will be anesthetized with eye drops. Steel contact lenses are then placed in your eyes to protect them during surgery. A local anesthetic will be injected through a thin needle into the areas around your eyes. If you are to sleep through the operation, general anesthesia is administered.
