| Tummy Tuck: Recovery |
|
 |
At first you will feel significant tightness and some muscle spasms in your abdomen. You will also feel a moderate amount of abdominal pain, which can be controlled with medication. In fact, most patients need narcotic pain medications for about a week after surgery.
You may not be able to stand fully erect for a week or more while the abdominal skin is stretching into its new position.
Postoperative bruising is minimal, but swelling is substantial. It takes up to three months for the swelling to disappear. You may also experience numbness of the abdominal skin and it may take several months for the sensation to return.
It generally takes about two to four weeks before you can return to work. You can exercise gently after three weeks and gradually build up to your regular workout over the following three weeks. You should, however, wait two to three months after surgery before attempting any abdominal exercises.
