| Tummy Tuck: Risks |
About 1 to 2 percent of patients suffer some degree of abdominal skin loss due to reduced blood flow to the skin, which may require further surgery.
Another rare but potentially devastating complication is blood clots in the legs. These clots can cause death if they are large enough and travel to your lungs or heart. To reduce the risk of clotting, you may wear compression boots and/or support hose during surgery.
About 5 percent of patients experience postoperative bleeding between the abdominal skin and underlying muscles. Symptoms of postoperative bleeding include rapid swelling of the abdominal region and severe abdominal pain. Getting plenty of bed rest for at least 2 days after the operation can greatly reduce the risk of bleeding.
