Calf Implants: About the Procedure
Calf implant surgery is usually performed as an out-patient procedure. The operation may take place in a freestanding surgical center or a hospital outpatient facility. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about one hour per leg.

Incisions are made in the crease behind the knee and the surgeon creates pockets to hold the implants beneath the fascia. In some cases balloon-like tissue expanders may be used temporarily to allow for gradual stretching of the tissue. After several weeks the expanders are replaced with the implant. If the degree of enlargement is not excessive, the permanent implants are placed immediately. Often, two implants are placed in each leg. Patients can usually go home about two to three hours after the procedure and can resume normal exercising in about six weeks.
