Nasal Surgery (Rhinoplasty): Questions to Ask Your Doctor |
|
 |
Should you have a rhinoplasty? Ask yourself specific questions and ask the physician specific questions too.
Ask Yourself
- Do I know exactly what I don't like about my nose? (If unsure, maybe it isn't surgery that you need).
- Am I willing to have some pain, discomfort, bruising and/or swelling for up to several weeks after the surgery?
- Do I really want this surgery? (Patients who undergo surgery for themselves are happier with results than those who have surgery to please others.)
Questions to Ask the Surgeon
- Are you board-certified? (If not, seek another doctor.)
- Do you have experience with this type of surgery?
- If surgery is done at your facility, do you have hospital privileges at a nearby hospital? (If there are complications, the doctor should be able to admit you to the hospital.)
- If surgery is performed outside a hospital, is the facility accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities or a similar review board?
- What is the fee policy if surgery needs to be redone? (Usually facility and anesthesia costs are fixed, but the surgeon's fees may be variable.)
