True Confessions: After the Fact
How about "true confessions" after-the-fact? Libby, a single woman who had a breast augmentation, wondered how to tell the man with whom she was becoming serious about her plastic surgery. "I agonized over what to say," she recounts. "So often Bill would compliment me on my figure telling me how much he loved my body. I felt guilty that my breasts were not natural, even though they were so much improved over what nature had given me!"

At last Libby decided she was ready to talk. "The timing was perfect," she recounts. "We were getting ready to go to the pool and Bill told me I looked great in my bathing suit. Without missing a beat I said, "Why thanks! I had help." I proceeded to tell him of my breast augmentation surgery five years earlier and of what had led up to my decision."

"He listened carefully. His reaction was wonderful—very affirming! A good-for-you-for-doing-something-positive-for-yourself response!"

Psychologist Kristina Lund’s counsel still holds true in an after-the-fact situation as well: You are not looking for approval of your decision, you simply choose to share the information. If pressed as to your motivation, you can offer this explanation: "I did it for myself, for my own sense of myself, and how I feel about myself," Lund suggests.

Besides, other people should not be commenting on your body or decisions affecting it, Lund asserts. "That is a boundary violation," she says. "It is a private thing."

There are countless people whose lives have been changed for the better by the abilities and gifts of a competent and well-trained plastic surgeon. Celebrate your decision! Celebrate your new appearance!
